An amazing prom for some amazing students

Talk about something to dance about! Students at Aspire of WNY celebrated together at the school’s annual prom Thursday morning. And what a prom it was!

Sixty-one students, ranging in age from 13 to 21, got all gussied up, with sashes, crowns, tiaras danced. They ate, and partied with their favorite superheroes. It is something that means the world to the kids, their families and the folks who worked tirelessly to get it all set up. Courtney Eastman, a teacher’s aide at the facility, says it was a true team effort, “When it came to putting it all together, it took a lot of blood sweat and tears from the Aspire staff.” And more than just the staff, it was a community effort. Michlers Florist, Tuxedo Junction, Leon’s Studio and other local businesses stepped up, stepped in and made it all a huge success. And for a few hours – on a Thursday morning – these students celebrated a special event that many of us take for granted.

Courtney says the prom, what it represented, and what it mean were all equally important. No thinking about therapies, medical equipment or even academics. Just pure joy. Because, sometimes a mid-morning dance party is the perfect recipe for fun, “Everything about the event is amazing where you gather up these teachers and staff that pour their heart into it just so their children can have a day where they’re smiling and can be with family and share this moment is really special.” We couldn’t agree more, Courtney.

If you’ve never heard of Aspire, their mission is quite remarkable: “To support children and adults with developmental and similar disabilities, helping them to live their lives to the fullest by providing individualized assistance based on personal choices.”
