Diaper Drive – A much needed resource for the community.

As a parent of a toddler still in diapers (although so close to being out!) – I know how expensive they are. As a mom of four – Oh, I know.  Thankfully, I’ve never struggled to buy them. Never had to choose between diapers and something else. I can’t imagine what that must be like.
Sadly, many do know what it’s like. Many women – right here in our own communities – struggle to care for their baby. To give them what they need. Including diapers.
That’s why Amy Buzzell of Nickel City Doula is once again holding a diaper drive. Amy tells me she it’s something she felt the need to do, “I have been a single mother. I understand what it’s like to not have to go without… to sacrifice.”
Amy says she and her partners plan to donate the diapers and wipes to Vive Shelter, The Priscilla Project, Buffalo City Mission, and Harvest House, “The need for diapers is one that is often overlooked. We did not have a diaper bank in Buffalo.”
And here is a shocking fact – No state or federal organization covers or helps to provide diapers to babies in low income households – Food stamps do not cover diapers. And they are expensive. Diapers can cost upwards of 80-100 dollars monthly. The bulk options are worth the value but usually too expensive for a low income family thus they will buy diapers in smaller qualities and ultimately pay way more money for less diapers.
Amy says the need here is great, “For many families, having these diapers will enable them to afford necessities they may be going without. For many babies it will mean being changed when needed. It will mean comfort. Less rashes, less infections. Less stress for parents.”
How can you help? Easy. Pick up some diapers and or wipes and donate them. Tell your friends. Share the event. Make a difference.
Last year they raised close to their goal of 10,000 diapers and wipes. Please help if you can. Donations of all sizes are being accepted through the end of June. But there is one big event to make it easy for everyone to donate.
The 2nd annual Diaper Drive will take place on June 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kenmore Municipal Green (intersection of Delaware Avenue and Delaware Road in Kenmore)
