Chalk has been around for ages as a “go to” way for kids and adults alike to explore their creativity.  An event in Hamburg has taken fun with chalk to a whole new level.

Chalk It Up To Van Gogh is a Sidewalk Chalk Community Art Project created by Eric Adams, the owner of Picture Your Walls in Hamburg.  The event will be held on Saturday, September 16 from 12 to 4 p.m.  in the Village of Hamburg.  Participants and spectators will be able to enjoy the FREE event in the parking lot of Attea and Attea on Buffalo Street.

Chalk It Up is part of the Flavor of Hamburg Festival.  It’s a festival with something for everyone – from an antique car show, motorcycle show, to music all day on the main stage.  Plus many local merchants, artisans, and restaurants will be set up on the sidewalks of the charming Village of Hamburg.  Enjoy a perfect Saturday afternoon of art and tons of fun!

Eric says he started Chalk It Up as a way to really get the community to enjoy, participate, and create art.  You don’t have to be an artist to take part –  all are welcome to draw, color and create – from toddlers all the way up to those who are “young at heart”.  This year, artists will be help recreate Van Gogh’s The Bedroom.

This is the 3rd Annual Chalk It Up event.   The first year’s event participants recreated Van Gogh’s Self Portrait with a Straw Hat and last year, The Postman was drawn.  While the first year’s event went better than expected, last year organizers faced a challenge created by Mother Nature.  “It was on the hottest day of the summer, so you can imagine the challenge of getting people to be on hot, hot, hot asphalt.  (Regardless of the weather), it was still a success.”

Art is Eric’s favorite pastime and is more than just a hobby, it’s his business.  For over 25 years, Picture Your Walls (formerly Winter Gallery) has been helping artists and art lovers alike.  Eric has proudly owned Picture Your Walls, on Buffalo Street in Hamburg, for almost 4 years now.  “Whether custom framing your memory, your treasure; restoring or enlarging or printing your photograph; providing WNY artists with a gallery (home) to display their masterpiece; or decorating your home or office walls –  Picture Your Walls does it all.”  For more information on Picture Your Walls head to or find them on Facebook.
