One in four.

Those are apparently the numbers when it comes to women losing a baby. One in four women experience this loss.

Amy Louise knows about that loss. The Olean mom lost a baby – a boy named Gavin – years ago. It still hurts, the pain is still raw and real.

This is Amy’s son,  Sebastian on what would have been Gavin’s 9th birthday. Celebrating the brother he never knew.

That’s why Amy is doing what she can now to help other women facing the same heartache. She organizes events and brings moms of angels together. She tells me this month, the remembrances, the celebrations – mean a great deal, “They mean the world to me. I started it a year after I lost Gavin. I wanted to help people. Other moms like me, and it actually helps me so much too.”

Amy is also incredibly grateful for her son, Zack – who is 14 and was just 5 when baby Gavin passed, showed his true colors – quite literally recently. She posted this on Facebook – A gesture by her son and the boys on the Portville Central High School’s JV Soccer Team.

“Zack asked me to get blue and pink tape for him to put on his soccer cleats… he said everyone wears pink for breast cancer awareness but that he wanted to add in blue for his brother and all the babies because october is also pregnancy and infant loss awareness month… he said he was gonna ask his teammates if they would add in some blue too… I said you can ask them… (I wasn’t sure they would do it…)  He took the tape to his game last week… when I  got to the game I witnessed the most beautiful sight… a bunch of them had the tape on their shoes. It instantly brought tears to my eyes. They have been wearing it on their shoes for every game since last week. I am not sure that Zack or these boys will ever understand how much this simple gesture of kindness means me. I am so thankful my boy is such a good boy and that he has such great friends… they are such amazing boys.  It’s the little things that mean so much… and this little thing is huge to my heart… ❤?”

It is the little things and this act of kindness is incredibly special. Sometimes, our teens and kids get a bum rap. Many are incredibly sensitive, caring, kind and lovely. And we celebrate them!

This is the “Wings of Love Memorial Tree”. It is in Lincoln Park in Olean – a place where those who’ve lost can go and find a bit of peace. Perhaps knowing they are not alone offers some comfort.

October 15th is Worldwide Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

The 9th annual Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Candle Lighting Vigil will be held on Monday October 15th at 7 p.m. at The Oratory Of The Sacred Heart 43 Maple Ave., Portville NY. They will be lighting candles promptly at 7:00 pm. If you can’t make it, organizers hope you will light a candle at home or wherever you may be at 7 p.m.

A reminder from organizers:  This event will be a small ceremony with poems and songs and a beautiful candle lighting followed by refreshments.  This is not a sad event but a celebration of our baby’s lives.

There will also be a Mass for the Loss of a Child on October 20th at noon at St. Mary of the Cataract Church, 259 4th St, Niagara Falls.
