We are pretty excited about Sawyer Fredericks coming to town for the Village Music Fest. Turns out – he’s a Buffalover and he’s really excited, too!

Yes, he really loves Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Western New York!!

I did a phone interview with the 20-year-old singer/songwriter recently and I have to say – he’s a pretty cool guy!!

Sawyer tells me he’s been here to visit many times and is looking forward to his upcoming show in beautiful Youngstown! “I am excited about it. I’m co-headlining with Rusted Root so I can’t wait to see them.”  He’s a big fan of festivals and performing outside – so it’s really a great fit for this soul singer.

This musician and true music lover is from Central New York and has been playing as long as he can remember. He’s an old soul – performing beyond-his -years lyrics – which he says comes from his imagination and a sort of what could-be mentality.  He started out at farmers markets and small cafes – but after his season 8 victory on The Voice in 2015 – things changed for the musician.

His career exploded and he’s been going non-stop since!

You know we had to ask for some scoop on The Voice and the judges – I mean come on…

The reality show winner says his time on the show was a true highlight and amazing experience – yes, meeting those famous judges – but also, hanging out with all of the talented and fun musicians who became like family.

“We were all staying at the same hotel and we’d have these – like these jam sessions. All of the contestants would get together and jam. It was like a band camp!”

And this calm, cool musician wasn’t all that worked up about his blind audition performance on the hit television show! “I wasn’t really stressed. To tell you the truth, I treated it like it was like any other performance.”

What happened is still a shock!

“I wasn’t thinking they were going to turn. They don’t have very many folk artists on there so I just prepared for my song and performed and all of them turned in like five seconds.”

Yep, it was pretty instant.

First Christina.

Then Adam.

Then Pharrell.

Then Blake.

What an amazing moment!

So, some scoop on the judges? Not all that much – but, Sawyer says they’re all super cool and he admits Pharrell gave him his cell number – and an awesome piece of advice. ”

“I really did learn a good amount from Pharrell – particularly about handling fame. One thing he told me was “Don’t read the comments.” He was talking about the bad ones but also the good ones. He said the good ones will go to your head and may have you start catering to your audience instead of yourself.”

It’s advice Sawyer says he’ll always carry with him. And, yes.. he’s proud of his win – but he doesn’t exactly shout it from the rooftops. In fact, you’ll barely find mention of it on his website and that is by design. “I don’t want the win to define me or label me.”

That being said, he’s grateful for all of it and says it sure has opened an awful lot of doors and has given  him a wider audience. “I’m very excited. I can’t wait to see where my music takes me.”

Well, it’s taking him here to an audience that could include you – on August 3rd at the Village Music Fest in Youngstown!
