Zittel’s Market is known to many in the southtowns as the “Big Red Barn” on Southwestern Boulevard near South Park in Hamburg. Did you know that the red barn is just one part of the Zittel’s family-owned and operated business that goes back 121 years??? Did you also know all that Zittel’s has to offer Western New York?
Every year around this time, the folks at Zittel’s Market put up an amazing Fall/Halloween display! A hay maze, farm animals, and loads of fun for kids. And guess what – it’s all FREE! Bring the kids and check it out, they’re gonna love it. Also, while you’re there – pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables, cider, and much more.
Now for some history – in 1897, George Zittel left his father’s East Eden Dairy farm to buy land in Eden Valley. The farm was sold to his son Amos in 1934 who sold it to his sons George and Paul in 1964. Today, George, Paul, and their sons, Bill, David, Kevin work together, and they are proud to welcome the 5th generation as Evan joins the business after graduating from Cornell University.
Amos Zittel & Sons is made up of a trio of businesses: fresh market vegetable production, greenhouse production, and a retail market DBA Zittel’s Country Market. Check this out – they produce vegetables on approximately 250 acres in Eden! From lettuce (Green Leaf, Red Leaf, Boston & Romaine), strawberries, peppers, cabbage, sweet corn, broccoli, eggplant, brussel sprouts, to organic kale, organic hot peppers and organic mini cucumbers. So many delicious and healthy offerings grown right here in Western New York!
Terry Zittel says that the family is so very proud to be part of the farming community here. “We have a very long legacy of farming in Eden and Hamburg and take great pride in being a part of the farming community.”
Zittel’s also has opportunities for local schools. The market offers educational field trips to any school or community group during the month of October. Activities are geared towards children ages 3-9 years old. The kids get to learn about vegetables, bees and farming, hear a story about growing pumpkins, have a snack of cider and popcorn and make a craft. They also play in our straw maze and pet baby farm animals! Call Zittel’s Eden farm office to schedule your group’s visit at (716) 649-6340.
